For thee years, I served as the photographer for a regional theater company in Fayetteville, AR called Theatre Squared. I helped plan and execute marketing photos, and I also captured production photos on set for every play. The dim environment of the theater poses many lighting challenges, so I learned a great deal about working in low light through my experience at T2. I also learned how much fun it is to photograph actors. I loved that I could say things like, "Smile with your eyes but not your mouth." and they wouldn't even question the request. Interesting people make interesting photographs, and in the theater world, there are plenty of interesting people.
All of the work I did for T2 was volunteered (a good friend of mine managed the company), but it gave me the opportunity to direct my creativity towards meaningful work that was seen widely throughout the community. Some people support their local arts community by giving money. I supported mine by sharing my gifts.
